About the position

The Summer Instructor for Halau o Kapikohanaiamalama at Kamehameha Schools Maui Campus is responsible for designing, planning, and facilitating culturally relevant learning experiences for students during the summer program. This temporary position focuses on student achievement through a Hawaiian culture-based curriculum, engaging students in critical thinking and project-based learning. The instructor collaborates with colleagues, assesses student progress, and creates a nurturing learning environment while managing day-to-day activities and communication with students and parents.

Responsibilities

  • Develop lesson plans and deliver learning experiences in accordance with course curriculum.
  • Engage learners in analytical and critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.
  • Address each learner's needs, interests, and skill levels.
  • Plan and coordinate field trips and educational activities.
  • Regularly assess student progress and modify curriculum and instruction based on data.
  • Model mutual respect and enforce summer school rules positively.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Collaborate with grade level teachers in professional learning communities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Elementary or Secondary Education, Math, Science, College Counseling, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a directly related field.
  • Knowledge of culturally relevant, age-appropriate educational strategies.
  • Experience with school-aged students and/or Hawaiian customs and practices.
  • Effective communication skills to build relationships with students and staff.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage workflow and multiple tasks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Summer program teaching experience.
  • Previous experience with DOE, Charter, Private and/or higher education systems.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian culture-based methodologies and 'aina-based learning.
  • Experience in working with ethnically diverse student and staff populations, especially Native Hawaiians.
