About the position

The Instrumentation & Electrical Engineer internship at BP's Whiting Refinery offers a unique opportunity for students pursuing a degree in engineering. The role involves collaboration with various disciplines to provide technical support, design management, and engineering solutions for maintenance events. Interns will engage in hands-on projects, troubleshooting, and optimization of electrical and instrumentation systems, preparing them for potential full-time roles in BP's One Engineering Program after graduation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for operating units and design management of projects.
  • Engage with operations, maintenance, environmental, safety, and engineering personnel.
  • Support day-to-day maintenance and reliability activities for refinery assets.
  • Troubleshoot critical instrumentation and electrical equipment in the refinery.
  • Develop scope and execute operating unit outage activities.
  • Use analytical methods to develop maintenance strategies for instrumentation and electrical equipment.
  • Provide technical recommendations and direction on instrumentation and electrical equipment to front line teams.
  • Work with process engineers to optimize and improve unit operations.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering/Technology, Mechanical Engineering/Technology, Chemical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Graduation date between December 2025 and May 2026.
  • No US immigration sponsorship support for internships or full-time employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with power equipment design and analysis.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation design and analysis of various instruments.
  • Knowledge of emergency shutdown system design and testing.
  • Understanding of financial and business decision-making methodologies.
