About the position

The Summer Nursing Intern position at Bassett Medical Center is a paid internship designed for nursing students entering their senior year. This role provides an opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) preceptor while earning college credit through Hartwick School of Nursing. Interns will engage in various patient care activities, attend weekly faculty-led classes, and apply nursing processes in real-world settings, all aimed at improving patient health and quality of life.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient treatments within the scope of unlicensed assistive personnel under the supervision of an RN.
  • Obtain and record vital signs and collect specimens as directed by the RN.
  • Provide activities of daily living (ADLs) including toileting, hygiene, and feeding patients.
  • Assist with mobility activities such as range of motion exercises and transferring patients.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly environment in patient care areas.
  • Communicate patients' needs to appropriate personnel and seek assistance when necessary.
  • Respond to patients' requests for assistance in a timely manner.
  • Report patients' needs and relevant care data to the RN.
  • Acquire knowledge and skills under the supervision of an RN preceptor and college nursing faculty.
  • Attend all required classes and complete course requirements.

Requirements

  • Nursing student enrolled in a college program, entering Senior year in the fall.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a health-related position or as a Nursing Assistant/Patient Care technician preferred.
  • BLS certification preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff.
  • Ability to function as an active team member.
  • Demonstrates competency in required basic care skills relevant to area of practice.

  • BLS certification preferred.
