About the position

The Lane Construction Corporation is seeking a Superintendent for its Raleigh-Durham, NC location. This role is pivotal in overseeing large-scale civil infrastructure projects, which include roads, highways, bridges, tunnels, metro and railway systems, airports, and water and wastewater treatment plants. The Superintendent will be responsible for scheduling all earthwork, roadwork, and other self-performed work while coordinating field crews through directives given to foremen. This position requires a strong focus on planning and scheduling to control labor, equipment, and material costs effectively. The ideal candidate will ensure the timely completion of assigned operations while adhering to budget constraints. Flexibility in working hours is essential to meet the demands of the role. In this position, the Superintendent will oversee field personnel, manage daily and weekly schedules, and supervise construction operations. Responsibilities include supervising and scheduling grading, drainage, paving, structures, and other miscellaneous highway construction crews and subcontractors. The Superintendent will provide leadership and direction to construction personnel, manage field operations, and coordinate work with other company Superintendents and subcontractors. An emphasis on safety, quality, and production is crucial, and the Superintendent will lead by example while assisting Engineers with quantities and productions. The role also involves coordinating equipment and crews to maximize efficiency, attending status meetings to discuss project progress, and performing additional assignments as needed. The Superintendent will assist estimators and engineers during the pursuit of new work, including borrow pit locations, plant site selection, and value engineering. Developing and training Superintendents, Engineers, Foremen, and Craft Workers is also a key responsibility. The Superintendent must ensure that all resources assigned are maintained, protected, secured, and used at optimum efficiency, while also enhancing public relations and the company’s image. A thorough understanding of project budgets and productions is necessary to manage personnel and equipment efficiently, and the Superintendent should have a working knowledge of all required plans and specifications. Mentoring Foremen and assisting with survey and field layout are additional duties that will be part of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee field personnel, daily/weekly schedules, and construction operations

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience for a Heavy/Highway contractor ($100M+ level)
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills
  • Ability to work in a high production environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of HCSS preferred
  • Understanding of types of equipment necessary for production
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively under pressure and deadlines
  • Familiar with DOT standards
  • Excellent team building skills
  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or similar is desired but not necessary
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and quickly adaptable to changing conditions across all spectrums
  • Demonstrated and verifiable ability to manage, supervise, schedule, and delegate on large and complicated projects
