About the position

The Associate Fire Protection Inspector Level-I position at the Bureau of Fire Prevention within the FDNY involves performing technical inspections to ensure compliance with fire safety laws and regulations. The role is critical in preventing loss of life and property damage from fire and emergencies, requiring a thorough understanding of the Administrative Code and various safety standards. The inspector will work closely with other fire safety professionals and represent the FDNY in legal matters related to fire safety enforcement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical inspections to ensure compliance with laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Conduct special inspections when directed and serve in an acting capacity as an Examiner.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of the Administrative Code and various laws.
  • Conduct office drills and establish proper procedures for managing inspection work.
  • Correctly identify hazardous and emergency situations and take appropriate action.
  • Review Inspector's work in the field and office to ensure reports are accurate and concise.
  • Ensure productivity targets are consistently met or exceeded.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous manner while dealing with the public and FDNY employees.
  • Represent the FDNY in the preparation and enforcement of the Administrative Code and other sections of the law.
  • Process all legal requirements in the issuance of summons, violation orders, and NOVs.

Requirements

  • Five years of full-time experience in the manufacture or storage of explosives or flammables, development of safety standards, inspection of premises for fire hazards, or design and testing of fire protection systems.
  • Education from an accredited college or technical institution in fire science technology, chemistry, physics, or engineering may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of four years.
  • A valid Motor Vehicle Driver's License in the State of New York.
