About the position

The Supervising Investigator (Health Care Investigator 4) position at the Washington State Department of Health involves leading and supervising a team of health care investigators to ensure compliance with laws and regulations governing health care professionals and facilities. This role is critical in safeguarding patient safety and involves conducting investigations, mentoring staff, and managing workflow within the Office of Investigative and Legal Services. The position is hybrid, allowing for a mix of remote and in-office work, and requires a commitment to equity, inclusion, and effective communication.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations of alleged violations of law and rule by health care professionals and regulated facilities.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and instruction to health care investigators.
  • Assign, review, and evaluate work while establishing performance expectations.
  • Monitor staff performance and case work to ensure thorough and timely investigations.
  • Review investigative subpoenas for proper format, content, and legal sufficiency.
  • Assist staff in investigative planning and provide guidance accordingly.
  • Measure core business functions against targets using quality improvement and performance management principles.
  • Monitor timekeeping records to accurately reflect billable time of supervised investigators.
  • Provide legal assistance for high-priority, time-sensitive cases involving patient harm.
  • Assist with emergency response activities during public health emergencies.

Requirements

  • Five years of experience as a Health Care Investigator 3, OR
  • Two years of experience as a Health Care Investigator 3 AND three years of experience leading or supervising the work of others, OR
  • Ten years of investigative experience with a criminal justice organization, regulatory agency, or corporate entity, three years of which must include leading, supervising, or managing investigators.
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in criminal justice, health care, or related health care field will substitute for two years of the required investigative experience.
