This position supervises a staff of medical coders, either inpatient or outpatient, and related support positions across all entities that are owned or managed that have opted into shared services. The Supervisor of Coding will be responsible for overseeing the centralized coding and support staff who are primarily remote across the health care system. This includes monitoring and managing work schedules, attendance, and providing motivation, counseling, and discipline as needed. The supervisor will also be involved in recruiting, skills testing, interviewing, selecting, and hiring new coding and support staff. In addition to supervisory duties, the supervisor serves as a primary resource for coding staff regarding coding conventions and guidelines, as well as HCS specific guidelines and processes. This role requires researching coding guidelines and payer requirements to respond to coding questions effectively. The supervisor will monitor coder productivity and manage the day-to-day operations of coding, including DNB/BWIP. Communication of process and policy changes is essential, including the development and revision of new and existing policies and procedures. Performance evaluations and work plans will be performed, with the development of goals and standards for the coding staff. The supervisor will generate and build reports as needed for productivity reporting and disease or procedure reporting to manage the coding process and respond to internal and external requests. Collaboration with other departments in the HCS on key initiatives such as mortality reviews and performance improvement is also a critical aspect of this role. Additionally, the supervisor will manage outside contract coding resources as needed to meet HCS DNB/BWIP goals and participate in DRG reconciliation between coding and Clinical Documentation Integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the centralized coding and support staff who are primarily remote across the health care system, including monitoring and managing work schedules, attendance, and providing motivation, counseling, and discipline as needed.

  • Identifies areas of opportunity for improvement in quality and performance and coordinates with the Training and Quality team when necessary.
  • Generates reports and builds reports as needed for productivity reporting and disease or procedure reporting to manage the coding process and respond to requests internal and external to HIM.
  • Works with other departments in the HCS on key initiatives such as mortality reviews, PSI's, SOI/ROM, etc.
  • Manages outside contract coding resources as needed to meet HCS DNB/BWIP goals.
  • Participates in DRG reconciliation between coding and Clinical Documentation Integrity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Successful completion of the UNC HCS Coder IP or OP Proficiency Test as applicable.
  • AHIMA or AAPC certification and credential is required.
  • Three (3) years of experience at the Lead or Senior Medical Coder level in medical coding if holding a Bachelor's degree.
  • Seven (7) years of medical coding experience with at least three (3) years of experience as lead or senior medical coder level if holding an Associate's degree.
  • Eleven (11) years of medical coding experience with at least three (3) years of experience as lead or senior medical coder level if holding a High School diploma or GED.
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10/PCS/CPT/HCPCS coding and billing compliance (MS-DRGs/IPPS, APC/OPPS).
  • Excellent analytical and data mining skills.
  • Ability to effectively participate and supervise projects, plan and implement programs, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and direct various levels of staff (including on-site and remote) as well as manage vendor relationships and expectations.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Effective organizational skills, time management, and management of multiple priorities.
