The position is for a first-level supervisor responsible for planning and directing employees engaged in the operation, construction, maintenance, workload planning, dispatch, and repair of the gas distribution system. This role requires coordination of operations activities with other areas and the identification of necessary changes to ensure continuous improvement in performance. The supervisor will oversee a span of control of approximately 5 jobs and manage 5-15 full-time equivalents (FTEs), both direct and second-level. Key accountabilities include planning, construction, maintenance, repair, and operation of gas systems, ensuring compliance with Operator Qualification and Codes & Standards requirements, and utilizing Lean Six Sigma elements for continuous improvement. The supervisor will also administer safety programs, ensure compliance with collective bargaining agreements, and maintain productivity levels within work crews. This role requires strong leadership skills, the ability to motivate and coach staff, and a commitment to fostering an environment conducive to the open exchange of ideas.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, construct, maintain, repair, and operate gas systems.
  • Coordinate construction and maintenance activities with other areas.
  • Supervise technical crews in daily activities and ensure compliance with Operator Qualification and Codes & Standards requirements.
  • Plan, schedule, monitor, dispatch, and control work resources.
  • Utilize Lean Six Sigma elements or other continuous improvement tools to enhance operations and improvements.
  • Administer safety programs and ensure safety standards are complied with in all work activities.
  • Ensure continuous productivity improvements through increased quality field time with crews.
  • Perform core supervisory functions including planning, organizing, directing performance, staffing, coordinating, reporting, and budgeting.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and 6 years of experience in Operations, OR; Associate's Degree and 4 years of experience in Operations, OR; Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of experience in Operations.
  • Operations experience in Natural Gas or Utility industry is preferred.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to identify key issues and recommend optimal solutions.
  • Ability to travel and report for work at different locations within the Corporation's service area.
  • Valid driver's license and compliance with Company driving standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Business or Technical Field.
  • Experience in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of Michigan Gas Safety Code.
