About the position

The Supervisor Laboratory position at Freeport-McMoRan involves overseeing the safe and efficient operation of a designated work unit within the Miami smelter and rod plant. The role includes supervising staff, implementing production plans, conducting performance evaluations, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols. The supervisor will also manage inventory, approve purchases, and train staff in safety procedures, contributing to a collaborative and safety-focused work environment.

Responsibilities

• Supervises, coordinates, and controls the operation of an assigned work unit.
• Assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of staff for the assigned work unit.
• Implements production plans according to the approved schedule.
• Participates in daily operational duties, performing the most difficult tasks as needed.
• Inspects and evaluates work in progress, identifying problem areas and directing remedial action.
• Conducts performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
• Prepares estimates of staffing, materials, and equipment requirements for projected work activities.
• Maintains an inventory of parts and materials.
• Approves purchases of materials and equipment.
• Maintains time, materials, and equipment use reports.
• Requisitions tools, supplies, materials, and equipment.
• Trains staff in safety procedures.
• Maintains safety data sheets for crews.
• Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED and five (5) years of related operational experience, including supervisory or lead experience; OR a Bachelor's degree in a technical mining-related discipline with at least one (1) summer internship experience in a mining or industrial environment.
• Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques.
• Skilled in resolving day-to-day questions/problems regarding equipment, materials, methods, and procedures needed to complete projects.
• Skilled in budget preparation, monitoring, and administration.
• Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Demonstrated ability to manage and oversee laboratory operations and personnel.
• Skilled in training technicians to ensure proficiency in laboratory procedures and protocols.
• Knowledge of laboratory processes and equipment maintenance.

• Previous experience with laboratory information management systems like StarLIMS and statistical software like Minitab.
• Proven ability to handle disputes and maintain a harmonious work environment through effective conflict resolution techniques.
