About the position

The Supervisor OC (RN) - Critical Care position at Ochsner Health System is a full-time role focused on providing supervisory and direct patient care in a critical care environment during night shifts. The role involves evaluating nursing interventions, coordinating care among healthcare team members, and serving as a resource for staff. The supervisor will also assess staff performance and facilitate problem resolution, ensuring high-quality patient care and operational success within the unit.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct, hands-on care for critically ill or injured patients in pre-and postoperative medical settings.
  • Assesses the risks and benefits of proposed medical interventions, rendering life-saving treatment in emergency situations.
  • Organizes, plans, supervises, and provides coordinated patient care within the unit.
  • Supervises, develops, and evaluates assigned departmental staff nurses and technicians.
  • Promotes the adoption of nursing protocols and clinical practice guidelines to support evidence-based practice.
  • Manages conflict on assigned shifts and collaborates with other supervisors and unit leadership if further action is needed.
  • Collaborates with patient quality, safety, and experience leadership and promotes patient quality, safety, and experience processes.
  • Supports daily clinical operations on the unit by ensuring effective scheduling, staffing, and appropriate clinical supplies and resources are available for patient care.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including respect for privacy and communication style.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current registered nurse (RN) license in state of practice.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
  • 1 year of relevant experience as a registered nurse OR 2 years of experience as an LPN in an acute care setting.
  • Excellent assessment skills and ability to detect very subtle changes in a patient's condition.
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medications and their actions, interactions, side effects, and calculations.
  • Ability to handle end-of-life issues and provide patient and family education.
  • Proficient in indicators of operational success such as unit productivity, expense management, regulatory requirements, and quality indicators.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • 2 years of relevant experience as a registered nurse.
