About the position

The Specimen Management Supervisor at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center is responsible for overseeing the phlebotomy, specimen processing, and send-out activities within the laboratory. This role involves directing and organizing pre-analytical processes, ensuring quality standards are met, and collaborating with various departments to enhance specimen collection efficiency. The supervisor will also be involved in staff management, policy development, and performance assessments to maintain operational excellence in the laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises assigned staff and maintains a staffing pattern to meet operational needs.
  • Sets the standard of quality of work for the department.
  • Prepares work schedules and maintains an appropriate workforce.
  • Works with HR and Lab Management in hiring, discipline, and dismissal processes.
  • Maintains work processes to meet laboratory turnaround times and quality standards.
  • Develops and maintains policies, procedures, and protocols in alignment with hospital guidelines.
  • Monitors work performance, identifies training opportunities, and oversees training of assigned staff.
  • Tracks training and education, maintaining competency and training records of assigned staff.
  • Submits performance assessments to manager/director for approval prior to due date.
  • Attends meetings and participates in committees as assigned.
  • Works with the Lab Leadership Team to facilitate improvement of laboratory services, operations, and organizational processes.
  • Oversees billing compliance and manual charge entry for send-out testing.

Requirements

  • 5 years of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory with a High School Diploma/GED.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstration of leadership skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3 years of phlebotomy experience preferred with an Associate or Bachelor degree in a biological science.
  • Lab Assistant Program certification.
  • Phlebotomy certificate.
