About the position

The Supervisory Air Traffic Control Specialist (MSS-2, Level 10) serves as an Operations Supervisor in a terminal Level 10 facility, specifically within the Seattle District of the FAA's Western Service Area. This role is pivotal in planning and directing operations within designated areas of responsibility, ensuring that air traffic control assignments are executed efficiently and safely. The Operations Supervisor is responsible for providing first-line supervision to a team of Developmental and Certified Professional Controllers, guiding them in their daily tasks and ensuring adherence to FAA regulations and procedures. In this capacity, the Operations Supervisor will oversee a staff of Air Traffic Control Specialists, planning and assigning work to be accomplished by subordinate employees. This includes setting work priorities and schedules, approving leave requests, and providing advice, counsel, and instruction on both work and administrative matters. The supervisor will evaluate employee performance, recommend performance ratings, and address employee complaints, escalating unresolved issues to higher management as necessary. Additionally, the role involves identifying training needs for staff and facilitating their professional development to enhance productivity and work quality. The Operations Supervisor plays a crucial role in fostering a diverse and equitable work environment, communicating and reinforcing diversity and EEO policies in all areas of responsibility, including selection, training, and transfers. The position requires active participation in the labor management partnership process, promoting a workplace culture where all employees are treated fairly and equitably. The effectiveness of the Operations Supervisor is evaluated based on the achievement of assigned program objectives, making this a critical leadership role within the FAA.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises a staff of Air Traffic Control Specialists responsible for air traffic control assignments.
  • Plans and assigns work to be accomplished by subordinate employees.
  • Sets work priorities and schedules for the team.
  • Approves leave requests and provides guidance on work and administrative matters.
  • Evaluates employee performance and recommends performance ratings.
  • Hears and resolves complaints from employees, referring unresolved issues to higher management.
  • Identifies and arranges for developmental and training needs of employees.
  • Implements strategies to improve production and work quality.
  • Adjusts staffing levels and work procedures based on resource decisions from higher management.
  • Recommends goals and objectives for the area and tracks accomplishments.
  • Communicates and reinforces diversity and EEO policies in all areas of responsibility.

Requirements

  • Must have held an FAA 2152 FV-J/FG-14 or above regional or headquarters position for at least 1 year (52 weeks).
  • Must have been facility rated or area certified for at least 1 year (52 weeks) in an ATS facility.
  • Must have held a MSS position for at least 1 year (52 weeks) in an ATS facility.
