About the position

The Supervisory Asylum Officer position at the Department of Homeland Security involves overseeing a team of Asylum Officers responsible for making eligibility determinations on complex asylum applications. The role includes supervising interviews, ensuring quality in adjudications, conducting performance evaluations, and initiating personnel actions as necessary. This position is critical in maintaining the integrity and quality of the asylum process, particularly in sensitive cases involving national security concerns.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise individuals making eligibility determinations on complex asylum applications.
  • Observe Asylum Officer interviews and review proposed adjudications for quality assurance.
  • Complete performance evaluations and initiate personnel actions when necessary.
  • Oversee the screening and adjudications of individuals indicating a credible fear during expedited removal processes.
  • Conduct supervisory reviews to ensure appropriate asylum benefits and services are granted.
  • Prepare plans, reports, and analyses of asylum benefits operations, reviewing individual and program performance.
  • Advise and plan work assignments for subordinates based on priorities and complexity.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the federal government.
  • Experience making final determinations on asylum or immigration benefits cases.
  • Experience analyzing the impact of policy or legislation on asylum cases.
  • Experience providing technical guidance or training to individuals adjudicating asylum cases.
  • Experience reviewing asylum decisions for proper application of guidance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in national security-related immigration cases.
  • Familiarity with emerging areas of immigration law.
