The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) serves as a national catalyst for the organization and distribution of biological, hydrological, geological, and geographical information and addresses the specific needs of the Department of the Interior and its land and resource managers. The USGS is the Nation's largest water, earth, biological science and civilian mapping agency, working in cooperation with more than 2,000 organizations across the country with numerous international communities to provide reliable, impartial, scientific information to resource managers, planners, and other customers and partners. The National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC) is an operational component within the USGS National Geospatial Directorate (NGD) which includes the NGTOC and the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center. The NGTOC provides world-class geospatial technical expertise, research, and customer service for the USGS and the Nation and is responsible for the acquisition, assessment, integration, and publication of geospatial data in support of The National Map (TNM). This includes oversight of Geospatial Data Products and Services Contracts, quality validation of products and data provided by external partners and contractors, development of national standards and data models, and providing technical assistance to federal, state, local and private sector partners. The Office of Operations performs tasks related to the acquisition, quality assurance, and processing of geospatial datasets and the development of products from these datasets. The Office of Operations provides authoritative data to The National Map and the US Topo program. Operations are carried out at both the Denver, Colorado and Rolla, Missouri NGTOC locations. The Hydrography Section Chief reports to the Deputy Associate for Operations. At times, responsibilities of the Deputy Associate may be fully delegated to the Hydrography Section Chief. A key responsibility of this position is to work with NGTOC senior managers to plan, coordinate, and execute production activities critical to the success of The National Map. The incumbent oversees the acquisition, validation, production, and maintenance of authoritative hydrography data in The National Map (TNM). This position leads a group of up to 30 geospatial specialists that include cartographers, geographers, physical scientists, and contractors. The incumbent serves as the technical lead for production activities, including development of new production methods and procedures to achieve program goals. The incumbent represents the Office of Operations in technical and program management meetings with USGS Mission Areas, other federal agencies, contractors, and external organizations.
