About the position

The Supervisory Civil Engineer position at the Department of the Interior's Albuquerque Area Office involves leading engineering design and construction projects related to water management and environmental protection. The role requires overseeing the design and implementation of various engineering features, ensuring compliance with technical standards, and coordinating with government agencies and stakeholders. This position is crucial for addressing increasing water demands while safeguarding the environment in the West.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and direct preliminary and final design work for engineering features required for construction and drainage facilities rehabilitation.
  • Prepare preliminary plans, design studies, technical specifications, and comparative cost estimates for construction or maintenance.
  • Participate in field assignments for data collection and other activities requiring design and cost estimating expertise.
  • Serve as a specialist in engineering design, contract administration, and construction management activities.
  • Advise other engineers and technicians on projects in the area of specialization.
  • Sign 'technical approval' on assigned projects and conduct peer reviews of work by other engineers and technicians.
  • Coordinate and maintain liaison with government agencies and representatives of business and private interests to negotiate differences and obtain cooperation for design approval.
  • Plan and develop work programs, technical surveys, and related activities on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • Assist the Division Manager by making assignments to division employees, establishing priorities, and reviewing completed work for technical adequacy.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National status is required.
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Current, valid Professional Engineering (PE) registration is required.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level, including experience in planning work, applying engineering principles, providing quality assurance on construction projects, and maintaining professional relationships with contractors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in managing multi-million-dollar construction projects.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance standards.
  • Familiarity with contract negotiation and administration.
