About the position

The Supervisory Hydrologist (Deputy Director) position at the New Mexico Water Science Center involves overseeing hydrologic data activities, managing a team of approximately 45 employees, and advising on the collection and analysis of hydrologic data. This role is a time-limited assignment not to exceed five years, with potential for extension or conversion to a permanent position. The Deputy Director will play a key role in ensuring the financial stability of the hydrologic data program and will be involved in developing partnerships with various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the Senior Management Team and principal advisor to the Center Director regarding hydrologic data.
  • Oversee employee career development, performance evaluations, and make decisions on promotions, training, and awards.
  • Manage and direct all Hydrologic Data activities with a budget exceeding $5 million annually.
  • Develop, plan, and administer the operations and activities of the NMWSC Data Program with over 30 reimbursable cooperators.
  • Develop and secure reimbursable funds to sustain and grow the financial stability of the NMWSC Hydrologic Data program.
  • Advise on the prioritization of New Mexico's Federal Priority Stream-gages.
  • Operate a government-owned/leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

Requirements

  • Possess a valid state driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Meet the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, including a bachelor's degree in physical or natural science or engineering with specific coursework in hydrology and calculus.
  • Have one year of professional experience in hydrology equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service.
