About the position

The Supervisory Interior Designer at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for leading the Interior Design Team within the Environmental Management Service (EMS). This role involves overseeing the planning and design activities of a complex multi-mission medical center and its associated clinics. The incumbent will supervise a team that includes two full-time Interior Designers, two Painters, and two Maintenance Workers, ensuring that all work assignments are effectively distributed and completed in a timely manner. The position requires maintaining communication with the Chief of EMS regarding project statuses and any issues that may arise, such as backlogs or resource needs. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining records of work accomplishments, preparing production reports, and providing on-the-job training to new employees. Additionally, the role demands a thorough understanding of current interior design standards, policies, and procedures, enabling the supervisor to guide their team effectively and answer any questions that may arise during the design process. The work schedule is full-time, Monday through Friday, with the potential for flexibility to accommodate project needs, including possible weekend and holiday work.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Interior Design Section of the EMS, ensuring effective direction and oversight of design activities.
  • Distribute and balance workload among team members according to established workflow and job specialization.
  • Monitor the status and progress of work, making necessary adjustments to priorities and obtaining assistance from the Chief of EMS as needed.
  • Maintain records of work accomplishments and time expended, preparing production reports as requested.
  • Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques, providing written instructions and reference materials.
  • Conduct on-the-job training for new employees in accordance with established procedures.
  • Stay updated on interior design standards, procedures, and policies, providing guidance to team members as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply for this job.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be able to serve a probationary period if required.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is required for all Veterans Health Administration HCP.
  • Time-In-Grade Requirement: Must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11 level to qualify for the GS-12 position.
  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level, including work related to interior design and alterations of interior spaces.

Nice-to-haves

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in interior design or a related field with at least 30 semester hours in interior design, interior architecture, or interior environmental design.
  • Passage of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination.
