About the position

The Supervisory Medical Records Technician (Coder) develops performance standards and conducts performance evaluations for subordinate staff. This role involves interviewing new employees, recommending selection, and carrying out training and development of reassignments, awards, or disciplinary action. The technician approves leave schedules and implements provisions of EEO programs to ensure fair and equal treatment for all employees. Additionally, they keep employees informed of management goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Applies comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, disease processes, treatment modalities, diagnostic tests, medications, procedures as well as the principles and practices of health services and the organizational structure to ensure proper code selection.
  • Selects and assigns codes from the current version of several coding systems including ICD, CPT, and/or HCPCS.
  • Adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines, and conventions when choosing the most appropriate diagnosis, operation, procedure, ancillary, or Evaluation and Management code.
  • Applies codes based on guidelines specific to certain diagnoses, procedures, and other criteria used to classify patients under the Veterans Equitable Resource Allocation (VERA) program.
  • Performs a comprehensive review of the patient health record to abstract medical, surgical, ancillary, demographic, social, and administrative data.
  • Assists facility staff with documentation requirements to accurately reflect the patient care provided.
  • Ensures provider documentation is complete and supports the diagnoses and procedures coded.
  • Directly consults with professional staff for clarification of conflicting or ambiguous clinical data.
  • Reports incorrect documentation or codes in the electronic patient health record.
  • Schedules the sequence of work and operations on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • One year of creditable experience in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and health records.
  • An associate's degree in health information technology/management or related field with relevant coursework.
  • Completion of an AHIMA approved coding program or equivalent intense coding training.
  • Mastery Level Certification through AHIMA or AAPC.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3 years of coding experience with inpatient and/or outpatient.
