About the position

The Supervisory Mine Safety and Health Specialist (Roof Control) is responsible for overseeing a specialty group within the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). This role involves managing the district's roof control program, supervising specialists and support staff, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations in mining operations. The incumbent will provide technical guidance, conduct inspections, and promote safety practices while supporting the career development of employees.

Responsibilities

  • Perform personnel administration and management duties.
  • Provide advice, counsel, and instruction to staff on technical and administrative matters.
  • Plan, direct, and review the work of subordinate specialists and other technical and support personnel.
  • Coach, mentor, and assist employees in their work performance.
  • Distribute work assignments to ensure balanced workloads and timely completion.
  • Determine developmental training needs and promote career development for employees.
  • Evaluate performance of assigned employees and ensure adherence to work rules and regulations.
  • Promote safety practices and identify job safety and health hazards.
  • Conduct classroom training related to roof control matters in mining.
  • Investigate roof falls, rib collapses, and other safety violations.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
  • Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
  • Subject to pre-employment and random drug tests.
  • Requires medical exam and must maintain physical requirements.
  • Requires a supervisory probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
  • Subject to financial disclosure requirements.
  • Requires a valid driver's license.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower level in the Mine Safety and Health Inspection Series.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in conducting formal classroom training related to mining safety.
  • Knowledge of mining safety regulations and standards.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate safety programs and practices.
