About the position

The Supervisory Operations Research Analyst position at the Department of the Treasury involves leading a team within the Research, Applied Analytics and Statistics Division. This role is critical in planning and executing work assignments, setting priorities, and ensuring the effective completion of projects. As a Front Line Manager, you will be responsible for evaluating the performance of your subordinates, providing guidance, and making recommendations for recognition or disciplinary actions. You will also play a key role in the hiring process, interviewing candidates, and making recommendations for appointments, promotions, or reassignments. Additionally, you will address employee complaints and grievances, ensuring a harmonious work environment. In this position, you will identify the developmental and training needs of your team members, facilitating their professional growth. You will be expected to initiate improvements in production and work processes, enhancing the quality of work directed. The role requires a strong foundation in operations research, mathematics, and statistics, as well as the ability to apply these skills in a managerial context. You will be expected to demonstrate leadership and technical competencies, ensuring that your team meets the objectives of the organization effectively. This position is not only about managing tasks but also about fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence. You will be part of a dynamic team that contributes to the strategic goals of the IRS, utilizing data-driven decision-making to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

Responsibilities

  • Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
  • Assign work to subordinates based on priorities and the capabilities of employees.
  • Evaluate work performance of subordinates and make recommendations for outstanding performance recognition and/or disciplinary action.
  • Provide advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on work and administrative matters.
  • Interview candidates for positions within the organization/unit and recommend appointment, promotion, or reassignment to such positions.
  • Resolve complaints from employees and refer group grievances as appropriate.
  • Effect minor disciplinary measures and recommend other actions in more serious cases.
  • Identify developmental and training needs of employees and arrange for necessary development and training.
  • Initiate ways to improve production, work processes, and increase the quality of work directed.

Requirements

  • A degree in operations research or at least 24 semester hours in operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, or related fields, with at least 3 hours in calculus.
  • One year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the next lower level, demonstrating managerial skills and technical competence.
  • Experience applying management techniques, methods, theories, and principles for program objectives with technical and administrative oversight.
  • Experience applying regulations and principles to oversee planning, development, and implementation of technical aspects of programs.
  • Experience applying communicative techniques to interact effectively with internal and external customers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of specific subject areas related to operations research.
  • Experience in project/program management or as a technical advisor.
