About the position

The Supervisory Operations Research Analyst position within the Department of the Treasury is a critical role that involves overseeing the Research, Applied Analytics, and Statistics Division. This position is designed for individuals who are ready to take on managerial responsibilities while applying their expertise in operations research. As a Front Line Manager, you will be responsible for planning and executing work assignments, setting priorities, and preparing schedules to ensure timely completion of tasks. You will assign work to subordinates based on their capabilities and the complexity of the assignments, ensuring that the team operates efficiently and effectively. In this role, you will evaluate the performance of your team members, providing constructive feedback and recommendations for recognition or disciplinary actions as necessary. You will also be involved in the hiring process, interviewing candidates, and making recommendations for appointments, promotions, or reassignments. Addressing employee complaints and grievances will be part of your responsibilities, as well as identifying training and development needs to enhance the skills of your team. Your leadership will be crucial in initiating improvements in production and work processes, aiming to increase the quality of the work directed. This position requires a strong foundation in operations research, mathematics, and statistics, as well as the ability to apply these skills in a managerial context. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of technical expertise and leadership capabilities, ensuring that the division meets its objectives while fostering a positive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
  • Assign work to subordinates based on priorities and the capabilities of employees.
  • Evaluate work performance of subordinates and make recommendations for recognition or disciplinary action.
  • Provide advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on work and administrative matters.
  • Interview candidates for positions and recommend appointments, promotions, or reassignments.
  • Resolve complaints from employees and refer grievances as appropriate.
  • Effect minor disciplinary measures and recommend actions in more serious cases.
  • Identify developmental and training needs of employees and arrange for necessary training.
  • Initiate improvements in production and work processes to increase quality.

Requirements

  • A degree in operations research or at least 24 semester hours in operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, or related fields, including 3 hours in calculus.
  • One year of specialized experience at a level equivalent to the next lower level in the Federal service, demonstrating managerial skills and technical competence.
  • Experience in applying management techniques and principles for program objectives with oversight responsibilities.
  • Experience in applying regulations and principles to oversee planning and implementation of technical programs.
  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with internal and external customers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of specific subject areas related to operations research.
  • Experience in project/program management or as a technical advisor.
  • Familiarity with labor relations concepts.
