About the position

The Supervisory Operations Research Analyst position at the Department of the Treasury involves leading a team within the Research, Applied Analytics, and Statistics Division. This role is critical in planning and executing work assignments, setting priorities, and ensuring the successful completion of projects. As a Front Line Manager, you will be responsible for evaluating the performance of your subordinates, providing guidance, and making recommendations for promotions or disciplinary actions. You will also play a key role in interviewing candidates and resolving employee complaints, fostering a productive and positive work environment. In this position, you will identify the developmental and training needs of your team members, arranging for necessary training to enhance their skills and performance. You will be expected to initiate improvements in production and work processes, ensuring that the quality of work meets the standards set by the organization. Your leadership will be essential in guiding your team through complex analytical tasks, applying operations research methods to solve problems, and contributing to the overall mission of the IRS. The role requires a strong foundation in operations research, mathematics, and statistics, as well as the ability to apply these skills in a managerial context. You will be expected to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders, ensuring that the objectives of the division are met while maintaining a high level of professionalism and integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
  • Assign work to subordinates based on priorities and the capabilities of employees.
  • Evaluate work performance of subordinates and make recommendations for performance recognition or disciplinary action.
  • Provide advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on work and administrative matters.
  • Interview candidates for positions within the organization and recommend appointments, promotions, or reassignments.
  • Resolve complaints from employees and refer unresolved complaints as appropriate.
  • Effect minor disciplinary measures and recommend actions in more serious cases.
  • Identify developmental and training needs of employees and arrange for necessary training.
  • Initiate ways to improve production, work processes, and increase the quality of work.

Requirements

  • A degree in operations research or at least 24 semester hours in operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, or related fields, including 3 semester hours in calculus.
  • One year of specialized experience at a level equivalent to the next lower level in the Federal service, demonstrating managerial skills and technical competence.
  • Experience applying management techniques and principles for program objectives with technical and administrative oversight.
  • Experience applying regulations and principles to oversee planning, development, and implementation of technical programs.
  • Experience in effective communication with internal and external customers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of specific subject areas related to operations research.
  • Experience in project/program management or as a technical advisor.
