About the position

The Supervisory Operations Research Analyst position at the Department of the Treasury involves leading a team within the Research, Applied Analytics, and Statistics Division. This role is critical in planning and executing work assignments, setting priorities, and ensuring that the team meets its objectives effectively. As a Front Line Manager, you will be responsible for evaluating the performance of your subordinates, providing guidance, and making recommendations for recognition or disciplinary actions as necessary. You will also play a key role in the hiring process, interviewing candidates, and making recommendations for appointments, promotions, or reassignments within your unit. In addition to managing day-to-day operations, you will be tasked with identifying the developmental and training needs of your team members, arranging for necessary training, and implementing strategies to improve production and work processes. This position requires a strong understanding of operations research methods and the ability to apply these techniques to enhance the quality of work produced by your team. You will also be expected to handle employee grievances and complaints, ensuring a fair and productive work environment. The ideal candidate will possess a solid foundation in operations research, mathematics, and statistics, with a degree or equivalent coursework in these areas. You will need to demonstrate managerial skills and technical competence, particularly in applying management techniques and overseeing program objectives. This role is not only about managing resources but also about mentoring and guiding team members to achieve their full potential in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
  • Assign work to subordinates based on priorities and the capabilities of employees.
  • Evaluate work performance of subordinates and make recommendations for outstanding performance recognition and/or disciplinary action.
  • Provide advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on work and administrative matters.
  • Interview candidates for positions within the organization/unit and recommend appointment, promotion, or reassignment to such positions.
  • Resolve complaints from employees and refer group grievances as appropriate.
  • Effect minor disciplinary measures and recommend other actions in more serious cases.
  • Identify developmental and training needs of employees and provide or arrange for needed development and training.
  • Initiate ways to improve production, work processes, and increase the quality of the work directed.

Requirements

  • A degree in operations research or at least 24 semester hours in operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, or related fields, with at least 3 hours in calculus.
  • One year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the next lower level within the pay band or GS grade in the Federal service.
  • Demonstrated management/leadership experience applying management techniques and methods for program objectives.
  • Experience applying regulations and principles to oversee planning, development, and implementation of technical aspects of programs.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with internal and external customers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of specific subject areas related to operations research.
  • Experience in project/program management or as a technical advisor.
