About the position

The Supervisory Operations Research Analyst at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is responsible for overseeing a team of professional economists, operations research analysts, data scientists, and mathematical statisticians. This role involves planning, coordinating, and conducting significant research projects that impact the IRS's operations. The incumbent will perform first-level supervisory duties, manage work assignments, evaluate performance, and provide guidance and training to subordinates. Additionally, the analyst will conduct quantitative and qualitative studies to resolve operational issues and develop policies that enhance the efficiency of the IRS's resources.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of professional research staff including economists and data scientists.
  • Plan and coordinate research projects of significant importance.
  • Evaluate work performance and recommend actions for recognition or disciplinary measures.
  • Conduct interviews and recommend appointments and promotions.
  • Resolve complaints and grievances from subordinates.
  • Identify training needs and arrange for development opportunities.
  • Initiate improvements in work quality and business practices.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative studies to analyze operations.
  • Develop analysis action plans and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Prepare written materials and presentations for senior leadership.

Requirements

  • A degree in operations research or at least 24 semester hours in relevant subjects including operations research, mathematics, and statistics.
  • One year of specialized experience at a level equivalent to the next lower grade in the Federal service, demonstrating managerial skills and technical competence.
  • Experience in applying management techniques and overseeing program objectives.
  • Experience in applying regulations and official guidance relevant to program operations.
  • Strong communication skills for effective interaction with internal and external customers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of specific subject areas related to operations research.
  • Experience in project management or as a team lead.
