About the position

The Supervisory Wildland Firefighter (Regional Fire Management Officer) position serves as the Fire Management Officer for the Alaska Region within the National Park Service. This role involves providing expert guidance and leadership for the regional wildland fire management program, ensuring the implementation of policies, and coordinating with various fire management agencies. The position requires a strong background in wildland firefighting and the ability to manage complex fire management operations across multiple parks and agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Regional Fire Management Officer for the Alaska Region.
  • Provide specialized guidance to the Regional Director and park fire management personnel.
  • Review park fire management and operational fire plans for policy consistency.
  • Coordinate with other fire management agencies and regulatory bodies.
  • Evaluate regional fire management needs and design action programs to address gaps.
  • Act as an expert consultant at professional meetings and symposia.
  • Serve as an instructor in fire leadership and risk management.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must pass a background investigation and drug test.
  • Valid driver's license required for operating government vehicles.
  • Must meet physical fitness requirements for strenuous duties.
  • Substantial wildland firefighting experience is required.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-13 level in fire management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in managing fire program budgets.
  • Ability to negotiate and implement agreements with external entities.
  • Experience in forming liaisons with external organizations.
