About the position

The Supervisory Wildland Firefighter position is responsible for overseeing and managing an Engine crew within the Bureau of Land Management. This role involves exercising supervisory authority, ensuring firefighter safety, and directing fire suppression operations. The supervisor will also be involved in training, administrative program management, and the implementation of fuels management projects. This position is critical in maintaining effective fire management practices and ensuring the safety and preparedness of firefighting personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise supervisory authority over assigned firefighters for an Engine crew.
  • Apply knowledge of firefighter safety, fire behavior, topography, weather, and fuels in fire management.
  • Supervise, mentor, and instruct employees on their duties.
  • Plan actions and direct the utilization of fire line resources.
  • Direct assigned suppression operations and recommend tactical strategies in the field.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of training programs to comply with policies and regulations.
  • Perform administrative program management functions such as planning and budget execution.
  • Procure, maintain, and inventory tools and equipment.
  • Supervise and direct fuels management projects including prescribed fire and mechanical treatments.
  • Participate in fire prevention promotional events.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.
  • Must pass an initial pre-employment physical examination and work capacity fitness test.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Requires regular and recurring overtime and shift work during peak fire season.
  • Must submit to drug testing and pass prior to appointment, with random testing thereafter.
  • Must meet specified levels on annual physical fitness tests.
