About the position

The Support Enforcement Specialist (SES) at the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) plays a crucial role in managing child support cases, ensuring that financial and family support reaches families in need. This position involves engaging with parents to establish and sustain relationships, ensuring compliance with child support obligations, and connecting families with necessary resources. The SES is responsible for a large caseload and must utilize strong communication and case management skills to influence both custodial and non-custodial parents effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as program agent for assigned child support cases.
  • Locate non-custodial parents.
  • Work with other state and country child support agencies.
  • Establish paternity.
  • Determine and assess child support obligations and health care coverage.
  • Ensure compliance with child and/or medical support orders through administrative and judicial enforcement actions.
  • Provide testimony in court proceedings when required.
  • Connect parents with resources and partners that support their ability to be self-sufficient and active participants in their child's lives.

Requirements

  • Ability to interact with a diverse public in a service setting to tactfully solve problems.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities in a case management setting.
  • Skill in information collection through interviewing and reviewing records and documents.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Skill in using a personal computer and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrated strong listening and negotiating skills with effective written and oral communication.
  • Demonstrated skills in performing basic mathematical computations.
  • Ability to work as a team member to set and achieve team goals.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working experience in gathering and organizing client documentation for financial transactions.
  • Knowledge of legal processes, including preparing legal documents and providing court testimony.
  • Working experience in child support enforcement.
