About the position

The Support Specialist 1 position is a temporary full-time role with ORAU, working in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The role focuses on supporting the preparation of soil, sediment, and tissue samples for various research programs, particularly within the Northern Research Station of the USDA Forest Service. The successful candidate will engage in laboratory operations, sample documentation, and chemical analysis preparation over a one-year period, from January 2025 to January 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the preparation of samples for chemical analysis.
  • Document samples arriving for Forest Inventory and Analysis, and Air Resource Monitoring Projects.
  • Catalog, label, and store samples, transferring data logs to PC computer spreadsheets.
  • Air and oven dry, sort, homogenize, subsample, weigh, and transfer samples into labeled storage containers.
  • Grind air-dried samples using Wiley mills and oversee student workers in sample preparation.
  • Operate, maintain, and train student workers on the air filtration system in sample preparatory rooms.
  • Contribute to the safe and effective use of soil preparation rooms and chemistry laboratory areas.
  • Enter data related to grinding of samples and measure pH for FIA mineral soil samples.
  • Prepare mineral soil samples for phosphorus concentration measurement and mix reagents for soil extractions.
  • Prepare samples for cation analysis and digest plant samples using a Mars 6 microwave.
  • Maintain consumables and material supplies in grinding rooms and ensure cleanliness of the laboratory.
  • Collect and file written data sheets and enter data into electronic spreadsheets for project storage.
  • Participate in weekly laboratory meetings and monthly staff meetings.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience or an Associate Degree in Chemistry and Materials Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, or related fields.
  • Open to U.S. citizens, 18 years or older.
  • Science support skills for sample preparation and chemical analysis.
