About the position

The Supervisor of Maintenance and Repair for Musical Instruments oversees the instrument repair shop at Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS), managing the maintenance and repair of over 1,500 band instruments annually. This role involves maintaining an inventory of supplies, tracking instrument repairs, and ensuring high-quality repairs to brass, reed, and percussion instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and repairs or replaces music instrument parts and components, such as pads, cords, strings, bridges, felts, and keys, using hand and power tools.
  • Repairs cracks in wood or metal instruments using pinning wire, lathes, fillers, clamps, dent rollers, or soldering irons and torches.
  • Reassembles instruments following repair using hand tools, power tools, glue, and lubricants as necessary.
  • Disassembles instruments and parts for repair, cleaning, and adjustment.
  • Polishes instruments using rags, polishing compounds, buffing wheels, or churnishing tools and protects finish with lacquer.
  • Compares instrument pitches with tuning tool pitches to tune instruments.
  • Inspects instruments to locate defects and determine their value or level of restoration required.
  • Plays instruments to evaluate their sound quality and locate any defects.
  • Enters, maintains, and tracks instrument repair records through FileMakerPro.
  • Manipulates brass and nickel silver to remove dents using dent rollers, mandrels, dent balls, and other devices.
  • Monitors inventory of parts and supplies and orders needed stock.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in music (Preferred)
  • 1-3 years instrument repair in wind band and percussion or related experience (Required)
  • Certification from musical repair school (Upon Hire Required)
  • Organizational aptitude
  • Ability to prioritize tasks
  • Ability to work with many types of people
  • Knowledge of up-to-date instrument repair techniques and technologies
  • Proficient in FileMakerPro or equivalent database management
  • Strong work ethic
  • Ability to problem-solve
  • Ability to work within deadlines
