About the position

The Business Developer Commercial Surety role involves leading an underwriting team to manage a large market commercial surety book of business. The position focuses on developing business relationships, underwriting large accounts, and ensuring compliance with legal and organizational standards. The role requires strategic oversight of risk selection, pricing decisions, and performance analysis to drive profitable growth in the territory.

Responsibilities

• Monitor risk selection, bond risk, renewal retention, and pricing decisions on a portfolio and individual account level.
• Review and approve underwriting decisions of staff and ensure compliance with legal requirements and organizational objectives.
• Analyze performance of portfolio and individual accounts, developing actions to drive profitable growth.
• Research large exposure bonds, requiring a deep understanding of publicly and privately held companies and business plans.
• Assist in drafting bond forms and analyzing underlying contracts.
• Review complex or escalated business and make underwriting decisions based on granted authority and company guidelines.
• Provide recommendations to leadership regarding underwriting strategy and opportunities.
• Create financial and operational goals, budgets, and timelines to meet company standards.
• Plan, develop, and integrate territory sales plans to achieve top and bottom line objectives.
• Direct associates, providing performance management, salary planning, and organizational planning.
• Manage training of associates within the surety organization to ensure high competency and professionalism.
• Develop and maintain strong business relationships with key groups and individuals within the commercial lines market.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree required.
• 2-5 years of experience in insurance underwriting, specifically in surety and commercial insurance.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with contract surety bonds, construction surety, and commercial performance bonds.
• Knowledge of legal and regulatory compliance in underwriting.
