About the position
The Surgery Nurse (Veterinary Nurse I) at Michigan State University provides essential patient care for ill and injured animals in the Surgery unit of the Veterinary Medical Center. This full-time position primarily operates in the operating rooms of the Small Animal Clinic, with responsibilities extending to Large Animal Surgery, Anesthesia Support Center, and Emergency and Critical Care. The role includes instructing and demonstrating techniques to students, assisting clinicians, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of hospital areas.
Responsibilities
- Provide patient care for ill and injured animals in the Surgery unit.
- Work primarily in the operating rooms of the Small Animal Clinic.
- Assist in Large Animal Surgery, Anesthesia Support Center, and Emergency and Critical Care as needed.
- Instruct and demonstrate techniques to veterinary students.
- Assist students and clinicians in their work.
- Maintain supplies, equipment, and cleanliness of hospital areas.
Requirements
- Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology.
- Six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterilization.
- Experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software.
- Licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.
