About the position

As a Surgery Tech/Medical Assistant, you will play a vital role in delivering comprehensive patient care within a clinical and surgical setting. This position involves a variety of responsibilities, including escorting patients, collecting vital information, preparing procedure rooms, assisting during surgical procedures, and ensuring compliance with company policies and HIPAA regulations. Your day-to-day tasks will include escorting patients to the exam or procedure room, assisting them as needed, and collecting patient information and history. You will take vital signs and perform screenings according to provider guidelines. Preparing paperwork for the patient's visit and ensuring accurate documentation in the electronic medical record is crucial. You will also conduct pre-operative intakes through one-on-one interviews, explaining surgical procedures and addressing any patient questions within your scope of practice. In addition, you will prepare procedure rooms and surgical trays with all necessary supplies, drape and disinfect surgical sites, administer local anesthesia, and assist the physician during procedures by passing instruments, blotting, and cutting sutures. Post-procedure, you will bandage surgical sites, prepare discharge paperwork, and review wound care instructions with patients. Maintaining infection control, cleaning and preparing instruments for sterilization, and managing medication samples are also part of your responsibilities. This role requires a commitment to professionalism, strong customer service skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to the exam/procedure room.
  • Assist patients as needed with walking.
  • Collect patient information/history; take vitals, and perform screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Prepare paperwork for the patient's current visit and ensure complete and accurate documentation within the patient's electronic medical record.
  • Complete pre-operative intake via a one-on-one interview with the patient, explain surgical procedures, and answer any questions within your scope.
  • Prepare procedure rooms and surgical trays with all supplies needed for procedures.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures in adherence to HIPAA regulations.
  • Drape and disinfect the surgical site, administer an injection of local anesthesia, and use a handheld cautery device to achieve hemostasis.
  • Assist the physician during all procedures (passing instruments, blotting, cutting sutures, etc).
  • Bandage surgical sites, prepare proper discharge paperwork, review wound care instructions with patients, and answer any questions or concerns they may have.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization in an autoclave.
  • Collect and accurately process specimens.
  • Prepare pathology and lab specimens and route to correct lab as required by patient's insurance.
  • Maintain accurate pathology log.
  • Remove sutures.
  • Notify patients of pathology and lab results.
  • Respond to patient questions in the office.
  • Maintain medication samples, discard out-of-date supplies.
  • Maintain infection control and cleanliness of exam rooms, and keep supply cabinets well stocked.
  • Document all medical instructions given to patients.
  • Other duties assigned as deemed necessary by management.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of recent experience as a Surgical Assistant, Medical Assistant, LPN or other clinically based patient care experience (highly preferred).
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Surgical Tech, LPN or Bachelor's degree program in a pre-med or pre-physician's assistant track (required).
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and work well within a team.
  • Professionalism and strong customer service skills are a must.
  • Able to communicate with the doctor clearly and concisely.
  • Able to communicate with patients and co-workers in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with HIPAA standards.
