About the position

The Surgical Assistant II position at The Christ Hospital Health Network is a part-time role focused on providing essential support during surgical procedures. The primary responsibility is to assist the surgeon by performing specific tasks that ensure efficient and safe operations. This includes maintaining positive customer relations, demonstrating technical skills, and being accountable to the manager of the Surgical Assistants.

Responsibilities

• Assist the surgeon during surgical procedures by performing specific tasks.
• Position the patient according to the surgeon's instructions for optimal exposure during surgery.
• Provide visualization of the operative site through appropriate placement and securing of retractors, suctioning, and digital manipulation of tissue.
• Utilize techniques to assist with hemostasis and closure of body planes.
• Select and apply appropriate wound dressings and secure drainage systems to tissue.
• Communicate pertinent information related to procedures and changes in the patient's condition to the physician and team members.
• Demonstrate leadership skills by motivating, educating, and mentoring peers.
• Participate in staff meetings and support professional growth and development.
• Manage workload effectively and understand fiscal responsibility in patient care.
• Assess patient and environment for safety risks and implement safety initiatives.

Requirements

• 2 years of college or specialty school in surgical assisting.
• Preferred 4 years of general experience with 2 years in any specialty area.
• Certified Surgical First Assistant certification or equivalent required within 6 months of employment.
• BLS certification required.
• Membership in a professional organization preferred.

Nice-to-haves

• Certification in area of specialty by 2018 preferred.
