About the position

The Surgical First Assist plays a crucial role in supporting surgeons during surgical procedures, ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment for patients of all ages. This position involves continuous communication with the surgical team, preparation of the operating room, and accountability for delivering quality patient care. The Surgical First Assist is expected to demonstrate teamwork and adaptability while serving as a resource to the Surgical Services team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Operating Room Surgeons and staff to ensure a safe environment for patients undergoing surgical procedures.
  • Communicate continuously with the surgeon about the patient's condition during operations.
  • Assist the circulator and anesthesia provider in preparing the patient and the operating room.
  • Perform tasks such as Foley catheter placement, tourniquet application, and gathering necessary supplies for procedures.
  • Deliver quality patient care and promote a positive image of the department.
  • Demonstrate teamwork and adaptability within the Surgical Services team.

Requirements

  • Holds a State of Texas surgical assistant license and/or maintains a surgical assist certification from a recognized body.
  • Current Certified Surgical Technologist Certification from a national certifying body or equivalent medical degree.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Completion of a Surgical Technologist certification program from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 2 years of previous experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist preferred.
  • 1 year of previous experience as a First Assist preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a full-service acute care hospital setting.
  • Familiarity with surgical procedures across various patient demographics.
