About the position

The Surgical Recovery Coordinator at Gift of Hope plays a critical role in the surgical recovery of organs from deceased donors for transplantation and research. This position involves coordinating the distribution of organs, collaborating with various departments and transplant teams, and performing essential surgical tasks under sterile conditions. The coordinator is responsible for ensuring the effective recovery and processing of organs and tissues, while also participating in quality assurance initiatives and training new staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the recovering surgeon in the surgical recovery of deceased donor organs for transplantation.
  • Recover organs for research purposes.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external partners to facilitate the donation process.
  • Document required clinical information clearly and input perfusion-related information into DonorNet.
  • Package and label organs for transplantation or research.
  • Perform surgical dissection and preparation of deceased donor kidneys for machine perfusion.
  • Monitor deceased donor kidneys during hypothermic machine perfusion.
  • Obtain, process, stain, and scan kidney biopsies for telepathology.
  • Participate in departmental quality assurance initiatives, meetings, educational activities, and required training as assigned.
  • Train and mentor new staff as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in a healthcare-related field, completion of an EMT program, or completion of an ER Technologist or Surgical Technologist program.
  • Current or previous licensure as a paramedic, or previous experience in the Tissue or Organ recovery industry or allied health field.
  • Ability to achieve and maintain competency in clinical and technical skills required for organ recovery and transplantation.
  • Experience working with and understanding sterile technique.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including effective written correspondence and professional customer service.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the organ and tissue donation process.
  • Familiarity with telepathology services.
