About the position

The Surgical Technologist 2 at Baylor Scott & White Health plays a crucial role in the interoperative phase of patient care, particularly in cardiothoracic, vascular, and endovascular surgeries. This position is responsible for ensuring the operating room is prepared and that all necessary instruments and equipment are available and functioning properly. The Surgical Technologist assists the surgical team by anticipating their needs and maintaining a sterile environment throughout the procedure.

Responsibilities

  • Discuss special needs with the surgeon before surgery and prepare instruments in advance.
  • Prepare the operative site by aseptically cleaning and clipping the patient as needed.
  • Maintain an organized instrument table to avoid damage and ensure correct instrument counts.
  • Identify and rectify damaged or incomplete trays immediately to avoid delays.
  • Set up the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules and arrange sterile setups.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of surgical instruments and equipment during procedures.
  • Perform surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items as per established policies.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team during the procedure.
  • Pass sterile supplies and equipment to surgeons and assistants during surgeries.
  • Assist with draping and positioning the patient for surgery.
  • Receive and pass surgical specimens to the circulating nurse, verifying the source of the specimen.
  • Assist with placement of surgical dressings post-surgery.
  • Disassemble surgical instrumentation and prepare for proper transportation to decontamination.
  • Clean the operating room after each case and return equipment to storage areas.
  • Follow infection control policies and regulatory guidelines to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Maintain inventory of clean and sterilized surgical equipment and supplies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Less than 1 year of experience in a surgical setting.
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire or transfer.
  • Successful completion of a CAAHEP accredited surgical technologist program or equivalent military training.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in scrubbing heart surgeries, vascular, or endovascular surgeries.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards.
