About the position

The Surgical Technologist (ST) works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse in accordance with the Standards of Practice and within the guidelines of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The ST is responsible for establishing and maintaining a sterile field, a safe patient care environment, and appropriate supplies/equipment as required for the operative procedure. The ST functions as a cooperative health care team member in a critical care environment treating the patient in a holistic manner with dignity and respect. The position requires the ST to assist in providing quality patient care in a manner which is patient-focused, technically appropriate, and cost effective.

Responsibilities

• Establish and maintain a sterile field and safe patient care environment.
• Prepare surgical field and ensure all supplies/instruments are ready per physician preference.
• Perform duties in the scrub role as assigned, including maintaining sterile field and assisting in emergency situations.
• Demonstrate customer satisfaction skills and maintain positive relationships with patients and healthcare team members.
• Participate in the development of action plans for improvement in patient satisfaction.
• Maintain professional growth and participate in unit/hospital committees and projects.
• Contribute to surgical services innovation efforts and submit improvement ideas.
• Participate in strategies to increase productivity and ensure appropriate staffing coverage.
• Communicate inventory needs adjustments to Nurse Manager and participate in cost containment strategies.
• Foster a cooperative team environment and actively participate in unit meetings.

Requirements

• High school graduate or GED.
• Completion of CST program.
• Certification as a Surgical Technician.
• Good communication skills.
• Ability to independently perform scrub duties.
