About the position

The Surgical Tech Extern PRN position at Texas Orthopedic Hospital offers an opportunity for individuals currently enrolled in a surgical technology program or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in a specialized orthopedic care environment. This role involves shadowing licensed Surgical Technologists and surgeons, assisting in the preparation of operating rooms, and learning essential surgical techniques under supervision. The extern will also provide basic patient care and participate in educational opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge in the field.

Responsibilities

• Shadow and observe licensed Surgical Technologists and surgeons to understand their roles and responsibilities.
• Assist in preparing operating rooms, ensuring cleanliness, sterility, and proper stocking of necessary equipment and supplies.
• Help with the transportation of patients to and from the operating room under supervision.
• Observe and learn proper surgical aseptic techniques and infection control practices.
• Assist with the preparation and handling of surgical instruments and supplies under the direct supervision of a licensed Surgical Technologist.
• Provide basic patient care and comfort, including answering questions and ensuring patient privacy.
• Participate in educational opportunities such as workshops, seminars, or training sessions as directed.

Requirements

• Current enrollment in an accredited surgical technology program or 6 months post graduation.
• Completion of prerequisite coursework in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and medical terminology.
• Valid BLS (ARC or AHA) certification.
