About the position

The Surgical Tech II (ST) position at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is a vital role within the surgical team, responsible for providing competent perioperative care to patients under the direct supervision of a qualified professional nurse. This position is designed for individuals who are prepared to assist in planning, coordinating, and implementing care for surgical patients. The ST will be expected to practice within an accountable work team, ensuring that all surgical procedures are conducted safely and efficiently. The role requires a commitment to maintaining high standards of care and professionalism, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals. In this role, the Surgical Tech II will prepare for surgical procedures by utilizing the surgeon's preference card to gather necessary supplies and instruments. The ST will practice sterile and aseptic techniques, which include performing proper surgical hand scrubs and preparing sterile surfaces such as the mayo stand and back table. During surgical procedures, the ST will manage instrumentation and equipment, ensuring that all countable items are accounted for to prevent retained surgical items. Post-surgery, the ST will be responsible for cleaning up the surgical area and caring for the instruments used during the procedure. Additionally, the Surgical Tech II will provide patient care, which may include medication management on the sterile field, applying dressings, and assisting with patient positioning as needed. The ST is expected to demonstrate professional accountability through effective teamwork, communication, and a commitment to continuous learning and skill development. This position is full-time, with shifts primarily during the day, and is located at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission in Shawnee, Kansas.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for surgical procedures using the surgeon preference card and obtain supplies and instruments for the procedure.
  • Practice sterile and aseptic technique as demonstrated by proper surgical hand scrub, preparation of mayo stand, back table and other sterile surfaces including the draping of the patient.
  • Safely manage instrumentation and equipment during the surgical procedure.
  • Manage countable items on the surgical field to avoid retained surgical items.
  • Perform post case clean up and proper care of instrumentation.
  • Perform patient care including medication management on the sterile field, dressing application, and assisting with positioning as needed.
  • Practice professional accountability by teamwork practices, communication practices, and obtaining information and skill when deficits are recognized.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • BCLS obtained through the American Heart Association

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
  • Graduate of an accredited school for Surgical Technology
  • 1 to 2 Years of Position-Related Experience
