About the position
The Surgical Technician at UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper plays a crucial role in facilitating safe and effective surgical procedures. Working under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses, the Surgical Technologist ensures that the operating room is safe, equipment is functional, and that procedures are conducted in a manner that maximizes patient safety. This position requires expertise in sterile and aseptic techniques, as well as knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.
- Ensure the operating room environment is safe and equipment functions properly.
- Assist with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist.
- Demonstrate knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique.
- Collaborate with the leadership team to identify and resolve unit issues.
- Maintain, operate, and monitor all equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and department standards.
- Collect, organize, and enter information into the patient scheduling application.
- Follow written instructions as needed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program.
- Previous Surgical Technologist experience preferred.
- Current Surgical Tech Certification preferred, or registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine required if employed prior to July 1, 2021.
- Ability to create and maintain a sterile field.
- Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and operating instructions.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology.
- Computer skills.
