About the position

The Surgical Technologist II at UChicago Medicine plays a crucial role in the operating room by assisting medical staff in providing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. This position involves performing surgical scrub duties, collaborating with various healthcare professionals, and participating in quality improvement initiatives. The role requires a strong understanding of surgical procedures, infection control practices, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Independently performs surgical scrub role on the operative field for all services, adult and pediatric.
  • Applies knowledge related to emergency and trauma situations and surgical procedures in the operating room.
  • Demonstrates infection control practices by utilizing proper aseptic technique while dealing with blood/body fluid.
  • Correctly uses sterilizers and high-level disinfectors related to surgical procedures; documents appropriately and maintains competencies.
  • Demonstrates organizational skills in case preparation, case cart picking, and accurate room set-up for instrument and tray contents.
  • Operates and troubleshoots video systems as needed, collaborating with various teams to maintain these systems.
  • Provides cost-effective care by proper use of equipment and instruments, demonstrating appropriate utilization of supplies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of immediate and long-term outcomes of surgical activities, including proper handling of specimens and medications on sterile field.
  • Develops, organizes, and delivers continuing education topics and/or courses for operating room technologist colleagues and Central Sterile Processing staff.
  • Assists in performing care of the surgical patient, including preparing the room, monitoring the sterile field, and ensuring quality measures are met.
  • Determines individual patient/surgeon needs and adjusts instrumentation and supplies accordingly.
  • Inventories and restocks supplies in individual OR suites and Specialty Service carts.
  • Acts as a liaison to Central Sterile Processing in the maintenance of specialty instrumentation necessary for quality patient care.
  • Communicates pertinent information regarding patients or unit activities to oncoming shifts.
  • Acts as a resource person to patients, visitors, physicians, and other staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of Operating Room experience required.
  • CST certification required.
