About the position

The Surgical Technologist Non-Certified assists in various surgical procedures under the direct supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse. This role is crucial in maintaining a sterile environment, preparing the operating room, and ensuring the availability of necessary instruments and equipment to support quality patient care during surgical operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in a variety of surgical procedures under the supervision of the surgeon and registered nurse.
  • Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions.
  • Maintain a sterile environment according to hospital policy and AORN Standards of Care.
  • Perform scrub technician functions for all services and specialties.
  • Assemble sterile and non-sterile equipment and adjust as necessary.
  • Pass instruments and sterile supplies to the surgeon and assistants during surgery.
  • Hold retractors, cut sutures, and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
  • Prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
  • Assist in applying surgical dressings.
  • Ensure availability of surgeon and case-specific instrumentation and equipment.
  • Assist in transporting patients to the Operating Room and help position them on the table.
  • Understand and use appropriate sterilization methods for equipment and instruments.
  • Prepare and label medications during surgical procedures under supervision.
  • Assist in transferring patients to the recovery area.
  • Help turnover and restock the operating room for the next procedure.
  • Respect patients' rights to privacy, dignity, and safety.
  • Provide a safe environment for the surgical patient.
  • Orient new Operating Room employees as required.
  • Work in conjunction with Registered Nurse to maintain equipment and instrumentation.
  • Participate in unit staff meetings and educational programs.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Graduate of an Accredited Civilian or Military Operating Room Technologist/Surgical Technologist program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (to be obtained within 90 days).
  • Must obtain National Certification within 12 months of graduation and maintain certification, or have been employed as a Surgical Technologist in a surgical facility on July 1, 2013, and become certified within one year of start date, or have completed a training program for Surgical Technology in the military and become certified within one year of start date.
