About the position

The Surgical Technologist (Operating Rooms) position at Geisinger is a part-time role focused on assisting surgeons during surgical procedures. This role involves preparing the operating room, maintaining sterile techniques, and ensuring patient safety throughout the surgical process. The position requires working on weekends, specifically Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, and offers competitive pay along with various benefits from day one.

Responsibilities

  • Assist surgeon with procedures related to patient care during surgical interventions.
  • Coordinate treatments with other disciplines.
  • Provide basic patient assistance and connect patients to clinical equipment as needed.
  • Practice aseptic techniques while preparing for surgery, including scrubbing, applying surgical gown, gloving, draping, and setting up instrument tables.
  • Participate in surgical time-out and operation briefing according to the universal protocol.
  • Identify correct surgical site with the circulating registered nurse and surgeon before incision.
  • Maintain an accurate account of supplies including sponges, needles, and instruments, and verify counts with the circulating nurse at the end of procedures.
  • Prepare, identify, and verify all specimens obtained during surgical procedures.
  • Dispose of linens, needles, and sharps in appropriate containers.
  • Assess wounds and apply or change sterile dressings as instructed by the registered nurse.
  • Maintain and document universal precautions and initiate emergency procedures.
  • Participate in the admission and discharge process.
  • Perform billing as appropriate for services rendered or equipment used.
  • Participate in on-call rotations of the operating room.
  • Act as a preceptor for students assigned to the surgical unit.
  • Adhere to all policies, protocols, and standards of care.
  • Perform quality control monitoring and additional duties as required.

Requirements

  • Graduate from a Specialty Training Program (Required).
  • Minimum of 1 year related work experience (Preferred).

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist within 6 months of graduation from the program.
