About the position

The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for managing the survey crew and ensuring the timely and quality delivery of survey projects. This role involves conducting various types of surveys, maintaining equipment, and serving as a liaison between clients and the project team. The position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to perform complex survey calculations while adhering to safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead crew members to deliver timely and quality work product.
  • Perform all duties of a Field Survey Technician.
  • Manage and perform ALTA, Topographic, boundary, construction staking, horizontal/vertical control, utility as-builts and GPS.
  • Participate in pre-survey meetings with project managers, engineers, contractor representatives, clients, and public agencies.
  • Research existing record information, including maps, plans, deeds, easements, right-of-way documents, data sheets and previous surveys.
  • Maintain field data records, survey project files and indexing systems.
  • Conduct field visits and inspections of existing conditions and potential hazards at project sites.
  • Perform research for survey records on various online archives and at the records archives of county clerks and various governmental entities.
  • Review all the research materials gathered and prepare a plan and schedule to accurately gather the needed survey data for the project.
  • Determine the survey personnel and survey equipment needed to complete the field survey.
  • Perform complex survey calculations using calculators, computers, data collectors and survey software.
  • Calculate and verify computations for working sketches, maps, traverse adjustments, staking coordinates, area calculations and volume calculations.
  • Supervise survey crew in the use of GPS receivers, total stations, digital levels, scanners, drones, and other survey equipment to collect and validate the needed survey data.
  • Record survey measurements and descriptive data using notes, drawings, sketches, and inked tracings.
  • Ensure that all collected survey data is properly archived and accurately reported to the design team, client or RPLS.
  • Ensure the integration of the field data and records into the completed maps, plats, drawings, and descriptions.
  • Supervise the field crew in search for section corners, property irons, and survey control points.
  • Calculate coordinates for laying survey grids and determine horizontal and vertical control points.
  • Compare survey computations with applicable standards to determine adequacy of data.
  • Prepare a daily report listing the activities performed by the survey crew and submit it to the RPLS.
  • Prepare and submit a daily time sheet.
  • Communicate directly with clients, the public, developers, elected officials, contractors, sub-consultants, professional and technical co-workers, public agencies, and team members.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining the company survey equipment, tools, supplies, materials, vehicles, computers, and software assigned to the crew.
  • Train all new crew personnel in the use of the survey equipment and surveying procedures to use in completing a project.
  • Train other crew members on the latest technology in surveying equipment and innovative ways to perform surveys.
  • Continue professional development by taking surveying, writing, mathematics, computer technology and business courses.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather and be willing to work more than 8 hours per day on occasions.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience as a Survey Crew Chief under the supervision of a licensed surveyor.
  • Maintain a Valid Driver's License.
  • Knowledgeable with Trimble Equipment.
  • Experienced in Trimble Business Center.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with AutoCAD (1 year preferred).
  • Ability to commute to Albuquerque, NM 87107 (preferred).
  • Willingness to travel (25% preferred).
