About the position

James River Surveying is seeking a Survey CAD/Field Technician to join their team in Norfolk, VA. This role involves a combination of field surveying and office drafting, with the technician spending approximately half of their time in each environment. The position requires working on various survey types, including boundary, topographic, mortgage, ALTA, and construction staking, primarily within a one-hour radius of the Greater Norfolk area. The technician will report directly to the Senior Manager of Land Surveys and will have the flexibility to work from home for office tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Process survey data and create boundary, topographic, and mortgage surveys using Carlson Survey.
  • Search legal and survey records as needed to complete work.
  • Coordinate work efforts with Land Surveyor and field crews via phone and in writing.
  • Locate and/or set property corners when necessary.
  • Operate a Trimble Robotic total station to collect location data, typically as a one-person crew.
  • Take clear, detailed field notes and sketches.
  • Recognize potential issues in the field and report them to the office.
  • Review field collected survey data to ensure project requirements are met and submit to the office at the end of each day.
  • Communicate with clients in the field on behalf of the company.
  • Maintain and protect all surveying equipment to ensure readiness for daily use.
  • Maintain vehicle in good working condition and professional appearance.
  • Train and mentor other survey crew personnel in the use of all equipment and procedures when needed.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and 2+ years' experience in land surveying.
  • Proficiency in CAD is required, with experience in Carlson Survey a plus.
  • Experience running total station and data collector.
  • Able to follow detailed instructions.
  • Willing to learn new concepts and adapt to new technologies.
  • Proficient communication skills including verbal and written, interpersonal and organizational.
  • Ability to interact professionally with other staff.
  • Ability to collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Trimble Robotics (Trimble Access) & Carlson Survey.
