About the position

The Surveying Engineering Specialist will play a crucial role in supervising field surveys and mapping within the DDC office of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. This position involves performing various surveying tasks, data collection, and mapping for division-managed projects, ensuring accurate data management and integration into design files. The specialist will also be responsible for route location surveys and the design of horizontal and vertical alignments, contributing to the development and analysis of 3D surface models.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise field surveys and mapping in the DDC office.
  • Perform surveying, data collection, and mapping for division-managed projects.
  • Manage data and integrate it into design files, including property reconnaissance and field ties.
  • Compute property information to determine right-of-way impacts.
  • Conduct route location surveys and design horizontal and vertical alignments.
  • Perform construction surveys and develop 3D surface models.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or related discipline with 6+ years of progressive technician experience; or a High School/GED Diploma with 8+ years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
  • Customer service experience in solving problems and explaining engineering concepts to customer groups.
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, drafting software, MicroStation, GeoPak, and familiarity with corridor modeling.
  • Working knowledge of field surveying procedures and proficiency with robotic instruments, data collection, and GPS.
