About the position

The Surveyor II - Instrument Technician at Mott MacDonald is responsible for operating and maintaining technical surveying instruments and measuring devices for pipeline projects. This role involves ensuring accurate data collection, performing routine analysis, and collaborating with the Party Chief to achieve project goals safely and efficiently. The position requires physical endurance and manual dexterity to work in various outdoor conditions and handle surveying equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain all technical surveying instruments and measuring devices needed for survey assignments.
  • Place marks, stakes, pins, and monuments for survey points.
  • Drive stakes to fix survey points and determine location data.
  • Measure distances using survey tape and accurately read measurements.
  • Obtain data pertaining to angles, distances, elevations, and descriptions using various surveying instruments.
  • Verify levels, alignment, and elevation of construction items.
  • Perform routine analysis to check the applicability, accuracy, and reasonableness of data.
  • Compile notes, sketches, and records of data obtained and work performed in a field book.
  • Reduce and plot survey notes for project documentation.
  • Participate in basic layout and field engineering activities.
  • Perform maintenance of field equipment and maintain supplies for the survey crew.
  • Work with the Party Chief to meet project goals in a safe and efficient manner.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years pipeline surveying experience, with previous Mott MacDonald experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with commonly used surveying terms and the use and care of survey tools and equipment.
  • Proficiency in operating survey equipment such as Total Station/Data Collector, Level, and GPS methods.
  • Familiarity with software for downloading survey data from data collectors.
  • Strong work ethic and team-player attitude.
  • Strong technical, documentation, and organizational skills.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment fitness-for-duty physical, background check, and drug screen.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Willingness to travel.
