About the position

The Sustainability Manager at Whitman College is responsible for leading and managing sustainability initiatives across the campus. This role involves collaboration with students, staff, and faculty to promote sustainable practices and energy-saving measures, while also serving as the primary resource for sustainability efforts and liaising with external stakeholders. The position requires strategic planning, program development, and oversight of various sustainability projects, including recycling, renewable energy systems, and educational programs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, plan, and administer programs, initiatives, and events related to sustainability in coordination with other community organizations and College divisions.
  • Supervise staff, student assistants, and interns in the Sustainability Department.
  • Act as staff liaison and advisor to student organizations on sustainability initiatives.
  • Oversee the College's recycling program and zero-waste initiatives.
  • Assist in managing energy and sustainability projects and campus energy management programs.
  • Maintain College utility records, analyze data, and provide emissions reports.
  • Collaborate with utility providers to optimize pricing and schedules for sustainability goals.
  • Manage the maintenance and development of campus renewable energy systems.
  • Chair the President's Sustainability Advisory Committee (PSAC) and advocate for sustainability goals.
  • Support the development and management of the Energy Renewal Development and Decarbonization Plan (ERDP).
  • Manage the College's Bike Share program and promote alternative transportation methods.
  • Develop sustainability awareness and educational programs for the campus and community.
  • Assess the College's transportation needs and emissions and work with departments to address resource conservation.
  • Serve as the College's sustainability representative to various organizations and manage reporting to entities like AASHE STARS.
  • Pursue grant and resource development opportunities for sustainability projects.
  • Collaborate on campus construction projects to align with the Campus Sustainability Plan.
  • Coordinate the Sustainability Revolving Loan Fund and support decarbonization strategies.
  • Oversee the Sustainability Department's communications and social media channels.
  • Develop long-term goals and performance metrics for sustainability efforts and provide regular evaluation and reporting.
  • Manage the EcoReps peer-to-peer education program.
  • Independently research best practices and compile data for reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a sustainability-related discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in sustainability initiatives.
  • Experience implementing sustainability initiatives at a college or university or similar institution.
  • Experience preparing Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS) submittals and GHG inventories.
  • Administrative and organizational skills with experience supervising and mentoring.
  • Valid driver's license with 3 years of driving experience.
