About the position

Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, responsible for developing, coordinating, and promoting effective sustainability and resilience initiatives for the City. Works collaboratively with City departments to develop and implement environmental and sustainability programs and initiatives. Develops, tracks, and implements sustainability or resilience plans and periodically updates plans as necessary, including the required resilience element of the City's comprehensive plan. Establishes and maintains performance tracking methods for sustainability goals. Assists with planning and design, permit reviews, and implementation of capital and infrastructure projects, development projects, and other efforts to promote sustainability principles. Researches and prepares amendments to the City's code of ordinances. Provides staff support and technical expertise on sustainability matters to the City Manager, City Council, City departments, and various City boards and commissions. Collaborates with community partners, responds to inquiries, and supports the implementation of community initiatives that align with the City's sustainability priorities. Attends City Council, commission, and community meetings that extend beyond the normal work schedule. Works with City departments to identify sustainability and resilience-related grants and funding opportunities, prepare and submit applications, and assist with grant administration.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and implement sustainability projects by working proactively and collaboratively with City departments.
  • Research and recommend equipment, technology, strategies, and processes that reduce waste, energy use, carbon emissions, urban heat, stormwater runoff, and hazardous chemicals.
  • Develop understanding of City procedures and departmental functions to support sustainability efforts.
  • Identify funding opportunities and manage external consultants for projects.
  • Analyze and measure success and cost effectiveness of programs.
  • Monitor sustainability and resilience plans by engaging with the community and City departments.
  • Develop initiatives to reduce the City's greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Assist in the development of City projects by providing support on public and private development projects.
  • Promote community engagement and education on sustainability issues.
  • Provide support to City Council, Boards, and Commissions by attending meetings and preparing reports.
  • Identify grant and funding opportunities to support sustainability projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, landscape architecture, urban planning, education, public administration, environmental science/engineering, sustainability studies, or a related field.
  • Over two (2) years of experience in planning, design, sustainability, resilience, education, public administration, and/or a related field.

  • Master's degree in biology, landscape architecture, urban planning, education, public administration, environmental science/engineering, sustainability studies, or a related field.
