About the position
The Patient Care Tech at The University of Kansas Health System is responsible for providing direct patient care and technical assistance under the supervision of a nurse. This role involves a combination of clinical and non-clinical tasks, including patient monitoring, clerical duties, and maintaining a safe environment. The Patient Care Tech must possess strong communication skills and the ability to work independently while adhering to departmental policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Perform clinical and non-clinical duties to prepare for patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment by cleaning equipment and reporting issues.
- Document daily duties such as hygiene, vital signs, and nutritional assistance accurately.
- Collect and label specimens for transport to the lab as needed.
- Make rounds on patients and respond to call lights promptly, ensuring excellent customer service.
- Report any unusual incidents or changes in patient condition to appropriate staff while maintaining confidentiality.
- Communicate effectively with patients and families, introducing oneself upon arrival.
- Enter orders and charges into the computer system accurately.
- Manage time effectively and prioritize tasks appropriately.
- Contribute to the plan of care under the direction of the nurse, following patient safety goals.
- Reinforce patient teaching initiated by the nurse.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- CPR Certification
- BLS Certification
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Strong knowledge of emergency procedures
- Ability to stay calm in stressful situations
